The web wars in the early 1990’s between Netscape and Microsoft opened up a completely new world for web developers. As more web developers got on board it became evident that indeed this was a war and nobody was winning. With different java scripts for each browser you were forced to commit to one, which was not working out for anyone, it was inhibiting the transmission of information. When the World-Wide Web was created by Tim Berners Lee was made compatible to other servers. Also with the developement of the World-wide web was web standards. Standards are important in order for websites to be compatible with all browsers. It is amazing how far we have gone since the 1990’s, that was not that long ago and we now walk around with our Iphones accessing information with ease.
How to Stop Worrying and Start Living
Posted in Uncategorized on 11/24/2009 09:52 pm by samccoyI really enjoyed reading this, it has made me want to read more and more about how damaging worry is. I worry alot, and yes it even keeps me up some nights, if its an issue I just cant seem to “shrug off” I may hold onto it for days, until it either works itself out or I fnally let it go, and declare” it is what it is!” . I have always beleived that negative thoughts breeds a negative life and positive thoughts will bring positive elements to your life. I really liked what he had to say about getting more information when you are worried about something, it is difficult to make any good decision without the proper information. Do you research! It is helpful and comforting. Sometimes I get so caught up in the worry that I forget to step back and look at this problem as facts rather than emotions. I would love to find another job, but what??? Sometimes it helps to set a deadline for the new job search, in 6 months I will give my notice and be on the ball applying for something that makes me happy. Research, is what needs to happen in the next 6 months, so when the time comes to quit you are confident that not only have you made the best decision but something wonderful is waiting! This is the point I am at, finding a career that I love and figuring out how to get there. We can do anything we set our minds to!
Web Based Programs
Posted in Uncategorized on 11/03/2009 01:25 pm by samccoyOne of my favorite web-based programs would have to be www.rateyourproffessor.com . This has really saved my life in college, you have an idea of what you may be getting into before its too late! They have made it very user friendly, you just type your school and location and the name of the teacher and you can really get the “juice” on what to expect. I also, of course love Google. Who doesn’t? How could you really compare Google to something like, Bing. Which I feel does not get you the best information easily. Wanna know something? Google it!
Presentations
Posted in Uncategorized on 10/25/2009 01:54 pm by samccoyI really enjoyed seeing everyones presentations, I learned alot about my fellow classmates! Three things I liked about my own powerpoint were my subject, I love talking about and promoting massage therapy! I also put alot of time into the images and colors. I wanted to make people feel relaxed just watching. The third thing I liked was how simple I made it, I did not pack in too much information in a short period of time. One thing I didnt like was, I was nervous and did not speak up enough, maybe some people had a hard time hearing me. All in all it went better than expected!
Carnegie Assignment
Posted in Carnegie on 10/19/2009 01:10 pm by samccoyThe relationship I need to work on most is that with a few of my coworkers. Taking the time to listen to them and what their needs are and letting them know that I am following through. ALot of times I have so many things going on at once, that even though I am listening, they may not realize that. Communicating and being clear on what is going on is my primary focus for improvement.
Organization
Posted in Organization on 10/10/2009 02:08 pm by samccoyFor me the best way to stay organized and my day less stressful is to make lists and check them off. I also find it much easier for me to have a hook by my door to keep my keys, purse, and the dog’s leashes. When your in a hurry, looking for you keys suddenly becomes an emergency! My job has so many details that keeping my daily, weekly and monthly lists is very important. I also load my calender on my computer with dates and appointments that I cannot miss. What I need to work on is condensing my lists and keeping it simple, sometimes I get carried away and have several lists going at the same time.
Time Management
Posted in Time Management on 10/05/2009 01:38 pm by samccoyMy biggest challenge when it comes to time management is staying focused on one task at a time. I often take too many projects on at once then have a hard time starting and finishing one thing. Even my husband cant make me sit still for a movie for more than thirty minutes at a time without me getting up to do something I had forgotten to do earlier. When I am at work and I have deadlines that need to be completed I will type out a short list of highest to lowest priority and I set short term goals for each day. This does help me from becoming overwhelmed and also shows my boss that the things she needs to be done right away are the first on my priority list. Also communicating with her on a daily basis confirming what needs to be done helps to keep me on track. Daily lists are my saving grace when it comes to time management, especially when you work for a small business. Everyday is different and there is always something to distract you from focusing on projects.
Soft Skills

When talking about soft skills, I feel confident that I am able to be successful in the workplace as being an active member of a team. Adaptibility, team work and verbal comminication being my stongest skills. I am able to take previous knowledge and apply it to current problems and situations. As far as areas I could use strengthening on, it would be time management. That is a skill that I feel with the correct training and skill I will be able to prioritize and simplify my workload
The World is Flat 3.0
Posted in The world is flat on 09/14/2009 04:28 pm by samccoy“Change your leaders not your lightbulbs”, said Tom Friedman, creator of The world is flat 3.0. In his lecture he talks about technology making the world closer together. When you call your credit card company, you are talking to a man in India, or you inquire about a warranty on an item you recently purchased you could be talking to a woman in the phillipines. Our american life has bled into other countries and cultures without us even being aware of it. The “American Dream” affects more than we are aware of. We also have become so focused on being earth friendly that we are overlooking some very basic things that will get us out of our deficit and also clean up the American image as a whole.
