Can’t We All Just Get Along

January 25th, 2010 by mwhulsey

I think that the Browser wars was and is a necessary component to the early evolution of the internet which I hope we are not at the end of. It reminds me of when I learned that long ago back when industrial machinery and combustion engines were being invented and every company had a patent on their particular machines. There was a hitch though since every machine was in effect a unique machine, that meant the parts and the parts holding it together were unique as well. So if a farmer had two tractors from two different tractor companies the farmer had to have two sets of entirely different tools (wrenches, screw drivers, etc…) along with unique nuts and bolts made especially for that particular tractor and those would only fit that machine. If you have even a little farm experience you can imagine the headaches this caused when if a tractor broke down and the farmer could not borrow a bolt from another machine or he would have to carry around a lot of extra tools. Not until the consumer had enough did the industry change and create universal tooling like we all know and love today. So it kind of correlates to the fact that web developers had put up with not having a set web standard for such a long time. Having to learn multiple languages for each of the different formats for which they would be working (Netscape, Microsoft). Until the W3C failed attempt which was to standardize protocols used by browsers, and to eliminate the need to develop websites specific to any one browser. Did anyone challenge the system that was and still is to degree still in existence. Fortunately, for everyone good ole’ money was in the end the deciding factor in the establishment of “web standards”.

No One Gets Hurt

Wow; Mr. Friedman threw me off when he went after the “green” façade engineered by the powers that be. His monster truck analogy really paints the picture quite well. I agree very much with him on that individuals are more empowered than ever before, in the booming online marketplace. That from someone’s living room in Little Rock Arkansas this person can communicate with anyone anywhere in the world instantly… it is really amazing even though my sensory adaptation has withered away that fascinating thought long ago. I couldn’t tell if he was being sarcastic when he brought the cab driver with the trilingual website with “music”, but him telling me that story reminds me I need to learn to speak and write Spanish.

I thought it was funny when he talked about the plane tickets, and people having printed tickets from home, not too long ago I was in the same situation. But he was also eerie in the way he pointed out that we (the consumer) turned into “virtual” employees of the company by doing all the paperwork that the company would have had an employee do. And how he states an individual can conduct business horizontally increasing the overall productivity. His insight ton Net Scape was very fascinating, I used to have NS for the fee of 29.99 a month its nice to know my money played a part in history.

I really enjoyed the presentation.

Killing Me Softly

December 4th, 2009 by mwhulsey

I consider my self having a very low EQ level, I really do not like small talk, and it seems the only time I’m good at it is when I have tipped back a few cold ones. Which bodes well for me in a non business environment but not so much in a business environment, I will have to become better at small talk if want to succeed in own personal ventures. I do have a knack though on motivating others, I can’t explain how it happens but it seems that have the ability to persuade and motivate. I’m constant problem solver and I consider my self pretty proficient at it too, like when a problem arises and I’m confronted with it I usually have a solution first… now it may not be the final solution but it is usually a start and with a little tweaking can usually help get the train back on the tracks.

I do suffer from foot in mouth syndrome or known as “FIMS” so having the ability to defuse situations is not a strong suit of mine.

How to Stop Worrying and Start Living by Dale Carnegie

November 25th, 2009 by mwhulsey

After reading a summarized version of the book “How to Stop Worrying and Start Living” by Dale Carnegie, I found it hard just to only hone in on one topic to work on in my life, this was a real hard decision choosing between criticism or lack of sleep. I’m sticking with criticism since an incident happened today, that even though it wasn’t a big deal still stuck with me and caused me a double whammy of stress and worry.

It all happened when I went over to my Mom’s house, where I have been spending a lot of time here lately due to my recent unemployment and the fact that her brick foundation is slowly caving in on her 100 year old home. Since I have free time I was dutifully put in charge of “re-pointing” which is masonry talk for hand scraping the old loose mortar in between the bricks of the entire foundation and refilling with fresh mortar… yeah great fun.
This area is not so bad but still needs repointing. Pictures, Images and Photos
So the incident happened when my mom was working and she mentioned something about making sure I get all the mortar off the sides of the brick. A simple statement but I let it get under my skin and then I worried about my mom thinking I’m not fully into the project. And then stressed me because it made me feel I was inadequate to do the most simplest of tasks in scraping mortar.

Lucky for me I was able to read the summary before I went over there, so I quickly recognized the behavior and took a step back for some self realization. Realizing I was stressing over a small insignificant comment, let it roll away. I figured I took the comment so bad because the giver was my mom, and her opinion matters.

Handling criticism has never been my strong suit, but in some ways the fear of it helps me to be more competitive. Overall however this fear has suppressed many actions and chances that would have benefited me but I was too fearful to put my self out there. That is another reason I chose criticism to work on in changing.

The outcome I expect… I expect to become more confident in my actions, and do things without fear of being criticized. I want to be able to be more bold in my life and start doing things that I would have normally not done, because I do not want create the scenario that will set my self up to receive criticism. Most of all is not worry about other say or will say, and believe in what I believe in.

Stay hungry, stay foolish….

November 23rd, 2009 by mwhulsey

I have been inspired here lately after reading a commencement speech given by Steve Jobs.
http://news-service.stanford.edu/news/2005/june15/jobs-061505

on Tuesday I will have gotten a business license and sparky media management will be here.

the idea is simple “Sparky” helps a small business or sales person get their name or product out there on the internet, using the top 10 media markets (Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, etc..) all with out this person physically doing it them selves. Using “Sparky” the SBO only has to send one email/phone call a day or whenever they need an update to Sparky and we update all the media markets they have chosen in their plan for them.

my first push on gaining a customer base is lawyers, restaurants/caterers, and real estate agents.

the excel training I have received in IT Blanco has proven itself useful because I have to keep track of the people I have contacted, also summary sheets of the updates for clients for their records.

I’m staying hungry by staying on task and doing all footwork, all the research, all the contacting, all the thumbing through the Yellow Pages.

I’m staying foolish so I do not see fear because my inner INTJ is in full  gear trying to keep me from projecting my inner salesman.

Web app.

November 8th, 2009 by mwhulsey

It is really hard for to narrow down one web application site I use the most, Google search engine would be the most obvious… but I would have to say You Tube. It seems that I am always looking up some obscure video clip to impress my online friends. One thing I think they can improve upon is they do not have, the feature of spell check… for example on Google search when you mistype a word or statement but get close the search engine will ask you if you really meant some thing else. other than that i am quite satified with YT.

It’s your lucky day!!!

INTJ

November 8th, 2009 by mwhulsey

I really enjoyed the Myers-Briggs personality test… come to find out that I’m an INTJ… the 2nd most rarest of the 16 personality types… when I read on websites the descriptions of the personality of INTJ’s I was/am really taken aback on how true many things stated are so very true.

I do not take a leadership role…. Unless I feel the leader is incapable then I will take the reigns and lead the team to the proverbial “promised land”… because I find that when I work in a team or group, most of the time we are carrying out my idea anyways. On the job I do have trouble accepting a supervisor who is less intelligent than me, and we often have conflict.

According to one website these are the jobs best suited for my personality type:
·  Scientists

  • Engineers
  • Professors and Teachers
  • Medical Doctors / Dentists
  • Corporate Strategists and Organization Builders
  • Business Administrators / Managers
  • Military Leaders
  • Lawyers / Attorneys
  • Judges

·  Computer Programmers, Systems Analysts and Computer Specialists

The Presentations

October 25th, 2009 by mwhulsey

I have say that I was not looking forward to this presentation, as soon as the class got started and witnessed the first presentation I kinda felt my topic was off base. However there were some positives the first thing I was proud was that I got up in front of the class, I know it seems insignificant to some of you but it was a big deal to me. Another thing I was proud of was I handled the power-point controls for the most part with ease. And I also liked that my song and video worked seeing as though last time I tried they both did not work.
I would like for my goal for next time to be more confident in my presentation giving skill. Also I would like to find a topic more concurrent in my life rather than some off subject banter.
