Browser wars

Posted by Danny on 25th January 2010 in Uncategorized

The point of the web is to make it accessible for everyone. It doesn’t matter what brand of computer processor or what system or what device the person is trying to access it from, it should all be the same. Without web standards web developers would have to make many different versions of the same page or websites to make it accessible with any browser. Making different versions of the same web page would be a waste of time, work and virtual memory. TO make the web accessible to every one web developers have to conform to standards. Users are not going to prefer and only use one browser so web developers have to make a web site accessible from any browser.

My Favorite Site

Posted by Danny on 9th November 2009 in IT

My Favorite website right now is definitely youtube.com. Youtube.com is a website where people can upload videos and everyone can see them for free. It is simple to find content on the site. All you have to do is type something relative to the video you are looking for (tag) on the search bar and you will most of the time find it and other related videos. You can also find videos by categories: music, comedy, sports, auto, politics etc. There ae however somethings that I would change about this website. Some of the search results are irrelevant and it makes it hard to find content at times. You can also make an account and subscribe to different channels and users so that you don’t miss new posts or updates. There are a lot of videos that say they are something in the description but when you click on them they are not. Youtube.com at times is forced to remove videos due to copyright infringement. There re are a lot of low quality vidoes that do nothing but clutter up search results. Over all this is the best video site out there and it is so simple to use.

My Favorite free Web-based service.

Recently I find facebook.com really useful. Not only does it allow me to connect with people I have not been in contact in some time. It also allows me to promote and advertise my self as an artist/musician. facebook.com allows me to create and publish events in which I perform in and invite everyone on my friend list and then the people in my friend list can invite the people in their list. Facebook.com is a very large and popular network so it is great for trying to promote an event. It even reminds the people invited when the event is getting close. Some of the advantages of facebook.com over other social network sites such as myspace.com are that facebook.com is usually faster at delivering notifications and messages and it is less affected by spam. Facebook has also really grown in popularity in the last year or two while myspace.com is losing its popularity probably due to facebook’s  more user friendly interface. Some of the disadvantages of facebook is that it doesn’t have the music component myspace has. On myspace anyone can make a music profile and upload their own original music and anyone can listen to it. Facebook also has limitations as to how far one can customize their profile. In general facebook has more pros than cons compared to other social network sites and it has made an impact on the number of people attending or being aware of my performances and that is why at this moment facebook.com is my favorite fee web-based service.

One relationship I need to strengthen.

If there is anybody in my life that I wish I could be closer too is my own and only brother. He is 7 years younger than me and it seems like we have nothing in common. We are very different and never agree on anything. We never have the same interests. A lot of this could be due to the age gap but I believe that if I practice more consistent communication with him we can learn things about each other that we did not know and maybe even find somethings that we have in common and spend more time together. I believe beiong a better listnener to him can accomplish this.

One thing I do to stay organized

Posted by Danny on 12th October 2009 in IT, Soft Skills

This may sound rather disorganized and it looks like it at time but for me it works. What I do is everything that is due like bills, homework, a call I am supposed to make or anything I am working on but haven’t finished it yet I put it on my table or desk until it is done. It really frustrates me to see a bunch of stuff piled up so it encourages me to get it done quicker.

Things I do to manage my time efficiently

time-warp

I am not a complete expert at managing my time but I have learned things from experience and past mistakes that help me stay on top of my assignments and due dates and not get too far behind.

The very first thing I do when I know a lot of things are about to start coming up I decide what is truly important for me and what I need to focus on. After I know what comes first for me I evaluate how long it takes me to do certain things and set time aside specifically for working on that that is most important for me. This helps me do the best at what matters the most to me. Being a student, anything that has to do with school comes first for me anything else like my job and volunteer activities is still important but not as important as my school work. Very often even within school work I have to do the same and decide what is most important. Being a music major my music classes come first and I set time aside to practice and work on these courses. Some other things I do to stay on top of my work are:

Mark calendars- I have forgetten dates before, but since I started marking calendars it rearely happens anymore.

Read Syllabus and job descriptions thoroughly- This way I know what is expected of me ahead of time.

Program electronic reminders- Most cellphones now days have this feature.

2 minute Introductions

Posted by Danny on 28th September 2009 in IT

It was very awesome to see some much diversity in our class room. We all come from very different backgrounds and had completely different life experiences and yet we still have a lot in common. We are all here to accomplish the same goal. I was very surprised to see how everyone even the quieter people in our class are so interesting and have so much to share and talk about, so much that 2 minutes was not enough I wanted to hear more.

What skills Do I need to get hired?

Posted by Danny on 21st September 2009 in IT, Soft Skills

What do I need to get hired?

I watched a video on youtube.com in which technical hiring mangers talk about what they look for when interviewing new employees. They shared how critical communication skills are in the workplace. Team working, listening, and verbal communication were mentioned quite a bit. They pretty much said that it does not matter how good someone is at what they do, without certain skills it will be hard to get hired or get promotions. The video makes a lot of sense. I have seen on many occasions people that are great at what they do but have a hard time finding a good job. I have also seen a lot of cases where I see an employer hire someone who barely finished high school to do a job they got college graduates doing all because that person had some great communication skills.

7 days of Listening

Posted by Danny on 21st September 2009 in IT, Soft Skills

I have always considered myself a good listener except for the fact that I am sometimes selective and only listened to certain things or people. The last 7 days I have monitored my listening skills. One thing that i noticed right away on day 1 while at a meeting at work, was that monitoring my listening skills made more aware of my flaws, for example if I dazed off and started daydreaming. The following days I really attempted to be more active and really try and think of the words people say, in what tone they say them and really looking at their body language. We had a meeting at work on day 3 and when the boss forgot what somebody else had said I was able to recall almost exactly what they had said and it wasn’t because I wrote it down or thought about it a whole lot. Another highlight of these 7 days of monitoring my listening is when I was having an small argument with my girlfriend around day 5. She denied saying something that I knew she had said until I repeated exactly what she had said. She did not think I was really listening, but she was surprised to find out otherwise
